Quick Recap: D’backs 9, Cardinals 7

At the very worst, the Arizona Diamondbacks have made matters interesting for the National League Central.

Tents and sleeping bags were cleared from the field of play just prior to the 12:40 matinee start time. Although both teams needed length from their starters both on the mound and in the field having played nineteen innings last night, a pair of injuries resulted in both teams pulling from their reserves early.

St. Louis Cardinals starter Michael Wacha failed to make it through the second inning due to an apparent shoulder injury which may keep him off their postseason roster. Arizona jumped ahead to an early 2-0 lead off of him in the first which held until the third inning. Jose Martinez tied the game on a two run double to left field off of Merrill Kelly in the third. Abraham Almonte pulled up lame in right field with a leg injury, so Torey Lovullo had to turn to Adam Jones off the bench.

The Cardinals added one run each inning from the fourth through sixth innings surging ahead 5-2. However, the floodgates opened in a seven run sixth inning for Arizona likely due to the fact that St. Louis had to turn to a gassed bullpen by the second inning. That seventh frame was punctuated by a Wilmer Flores two run home run into the left field bleachers. Jimmie Sherfy & Archie Bradley made it interesting in the top of the ninth giving up two runs, but Arizona held on to the lead to secure the series victory. The D’backs will finish out the season in a three game set against the San Diego Padres.

Full recap to follow when I return home from the game.
