Snake Bytes 8/1: Trade Deadline Twister

The Diamondbacks made some shocking trades, but reviews are positive.

Diamondbacks News:

D-backs trade Zack Greinke for “big-time prospect haul.”

Greinke, still owed $77 million, was traded to the Astros for three top 5 prospects, Beer, Bakauskas, Martin (recent TJ) and the #22 prospect in the Astros system, Rojas. The Astros will pay $53 million of Greinke’s remaining contract as well.

D-backs get Gallen from Fish, Leake from M’s.

The D-backs traded Jazz Chisolm, their #1 draft pick, to the Miami Marlins for starting pitcher Zac Gallen.

The D-backs traded high A infielder Jose Caballero to Seattle for starting pitcher Mike Leake.

Braves to acquire John Ryan Murphy for cash.

A depth move to safeguard against injuries to Brian McCann and Tyler Flowers down the stretch — and possibly to roster a third catcher in September. Pour out a lil liquor for Rockkstarr.

Mike Hazen cracks Jerry DiPoto joke about trade deadline moves.

“I didn’t start out today hoping to channel Jerry Dipoto as my spirit animal, but somehow we sort of ended up there,” Hazen said, per Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic.

D-backs earn high praise after Grienke trade.

They’re acquiring four prospects from a loaded farm system, three of them in the top five; this includes Beer (anyone thirsty?), who could develop into a legitimate power threat and Martin (out this season with Tommy John), who could develop into a quality starter.”

MLB executives on the trade deadline.

“When [Trevor] Bauer was traded, you figured he would probably be the biggest starter to go,” one executive said. “Some might think Bauer is better than Greinke, but you can’t deny that Greinke will be a much bigger factor in this year’s playoff race.”

Who TF thinks that Bauer is better than Greinke? A better rapper, maybe.
