The Diamondbacks Minor League affiliates combined to go 3-0 last night. Pitching was the story in all three games, as Visalia (11-game win streak now), Kane County, and Jackson combined to allow 1 unearned run on 22 hits in 27 combined innings. Apparently they took notes of what Luke Weaver did to Pittsburgh yesterday. Not bad when the organization has a total ERA of 0.00 for the day. All three games proved to be mostly comfortable wins, with the closest margin being 3 runs. V
Here the star pitchers from last night’s game:
3 Stars: Jackson RHP Sam Lewis 6 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K, W (2-1)
2 Stars: Kane County RHP Justin Lewis 5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K, W (1-1)
1 Star: Visalia RHP Josh Green 6 IP, 6 H, 1 R (0 ER), 0 BB, 3 K, W (2-1)
Apparently if your surname was Lewis and you pitched for the Dbacks organization, you probably had a good day.
Let’s also give these hitters some recognition as well:
3 Stars: Jackson C Daulton Varsho 3 for 4, 2-R HR (3)
2 Stars: Visalia 2B Luis Alejandro Basabe 1 for 2, HR (3), 4 RBI, 2 BB, 2 R
1 Star: Kane County 3B Alex King 2 for 4, HR (3), RBI, 2 R
(AA) Jackson Generals 3, Birmingham Barons 0: Generals (10-7) starter Sam Lewis combined with 2 relievers for a 7-hit shutout of the Birmingham Barons. Lewis went the front 6 innings, allowing 5 hits and a K/BB ratio of 6/1. The offense came off the long ball, with a solo homer by Jamie Westbrook in the 3rd and a 2-run insurance blast from Daulton Varsho in the 6th. Ryan Atkinson allowed 2 hits, but pitched 2 scoreless innings. Michael Kohn pitched around a walk to record a save.
(A+) Visalia Rawhide 7, Stockton Ports 1: Not every day you can say the game was over after the first inning, but that was the case in this one. Visalia (15-4) loaded the bases on walks with 1 out before a 2-run single by Renae Martinez and a 3-run homer by Luis Alejandro Basabe scored them all and took a 5-0 lead. Josh Green would allow a run in the 2nd, in large part to his own throwing error, but that was it between three minor league affiliates. Green continued to rake up the ground balls, getting 12 groundouts in the game over 6 innings. Visalia would tack on two more on a RBI double by Anfernee Grier and a bases loaded walk by Basabe for his 4th RBI.
(A) Kane County Cougars 4, Burlington Bees 0: Justin Lewis apparently like what Sam Lewis did and decided to copy that as he and two relievers combined for a 5-hit shutout. He allowed just 4 hits and no runs over 5 innings with a K/BB of 4/0. Alex King opened up the scoring with a 3rd inning HR before Alek Thomas added an RBI single in the 4th. Kenny Hernandez pitched the next 3 innings and gave up just a lousy single and a walk. Eddie Hernandez would add 2 insurance runs with a single in the 9th for the game’s final tally.
