Merrill Kelly hasn’t had the greatest debut for his new team, struggling with both control and his ability to get people out early on in Spring Training. Starts like these help erase some of the doubt that comes with poor performance.
Kelly went 5 innings today, giving up just 3 hits and 1 run with 3 strikeouts to round out his outing. His only blemish was a 1-out double followed by a Mike Trout single in the 3rd to put the Angels on top early 1-0. He finished strong, shutting the Angels down in order to end his outing. He finished with 71 total pitches and limited damage in one of his last tune-ups before the regular season.
The offense had many MLB regulars taking at-bats, with most of them unable to do much of anything at the plate. 6 hits in total, with Jake Lamb and Nick Ahmed grabbing a single each. The Angels bullpen worked 6 innings, allowing just a single run in the 8th after Socrates Brito doubled and Matt Szczur singled him in. It was too little as the Angels 2-1 lead held and they won the game.
The D-backs continue their Spring Training schedule with the National League Champion Los Angeles Dodgers tomorrow at Camelback Ranch. First pitch is at 1:05pm.
