60 Arizona Diamondbacks players invited to spring training

There are a total of 60 players who will be coming to Salt River Fields next month, when spring training gets under way. The entire 40-man roster will be present, of course, but there are also 20 additional non-roster invitees who will be getting a look. These range from up and coming prospects getting their first experience of hanging with major leaguers to... Well, let’s be honest: to Yasmany Tomas. :) Most of the names should be at least somewhat familiar round these parts if you’ve been paying attention. But next week, we’ll be going through the non-roster invitees and giving you a quick heads-up as to where they came from, their track record and what to expect from them.

Interesting to note the dearth of left-handed pitchers on the list. Of the sixty players in total, including 31 pitchers, only four are left-handed. On that basis, it appears that Andrew Chafin and T.J. McFarland are locks for the bullpen, Robbie Ray is certainly going to be in the rotation (health permitting, touch wood!) and even relatively new acquisition Robby Scott would seem to have a shot, simply based on the lack of competition. He’s already the third-best left-handed reliever in camp, before he has thrown even a single pitch! Oh, and we now know that Wilmer Flores will be wearing #41.

The first public workout for pitchers and catchers takes place on February 12. The first full workout for all players is February 18, and the Cactus League gets under way five days later, against the Rockies on February 23.
