The Diamondbacks Minor League affiliates combined to go 2-2. The Reno Aces and Missoula Osprey had off days while the AZL Dbacks were rained out. No stars in this recap because there weren’t many standout performances. I’ll just go with top pitching and hitting performances across the system instead.
Hitter of the Day: Visalia 1B Pavin Smith 2 for 4, 2-run homer (9)
Pitcher of the Day: Hillsboro RHP West Tunnell 2 1⁄3 perfect innings, 3 K, hold (1)
AA: Jackson Generals 2, Biloxi Shuckers 12- The Generals were well behind the 8-ball early as Joel Payamps got lit up for 6 runs on 8 hits in 5 innings with 2 walks and 5 strikeouts. The bullpen was not much better as Kirby Bellow and Brian Ellington each allowed 3 runs in relief, the latter only lasting 1⁄3 of an inning with 4 walks. The offense wasn’t able to put much of a dent into the scoreboard despite picking up 4 hits with RISP.
A+: Visalia Rawhide 3, Modesto Nuts 5- The Rawhide offense struggled and Riley Smith turned in an OK performance with 4 runs (3 earned) in 6 2⁄3 innings with 4 walks and 4 strikeouts. Smith only got 1 run of support while in the game. The Rawhide made a run at it in the 8th when Pavin Smith belted out his 9th homer of the year, a 2-run shot to right field, to make it a 1-run game. Thanks to some questionable defense, the Rawhide got the tying runs on base with 1 out in the 9th but did nothing afterwards with a pair of swinging strikeouts to end it.
A: Kane County Cougars 3, Cedar Rapids Kernels 2- Jhoan Duran turned in another meh performance with 2 runs allowed in 5 innings despite allowing 6 hits and a 3/3 K/BB for the game. The Cougars offense wasn’t much better with only singles being the form of offense, but the 3-5 hitters combined for 7 hits and all 3 runs. Yoel Yanqui was 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored while Yan Sanchez had 2 hits and 2 RBI. The bullpen pitched itself in and out of trouble, ultimately posting four scoreless despite traffic on the bases.
A-: Hillsboro Hops 4, Eugene Emeralds 2: Jackson Goddard allowed 2 runs in his 1 inning of work as he was unable to find any control. The bullpen on the other hand, was outstanding with 8 scoreless and some noteworthy performances. Bryan Valdez pitched 3 2⁄3 innings with 5 strikeouts, West Tunnell set down all 7 hitters he faced with 3 going down by strikes, Ethan Larrison a scoreless 8th, and Kyler Stout a dominating 9th inning with 2 strikeouts and a ground ball to the mound. The 5th inning was good for Hillsboro with a home run leading off the inning from Francis Martinez then death by small ball to cap off a 3-run frame.
