Triple-A Reno 4, Las Vegas 5. A three-run seventh inning off Neftali Feliz cost Anthony Vasquez a shot at victory, after a quality start. Vasquez allowed two runs in six innings, on four hits and four walks with six K’s. But Feliz gave up three hits and a walk to take the loss for the Aces. They outhit the 51’s 10-8, with two apiece for 3B Kristopher Negron and 1B Christian Walker, as well as two by Vasquez. SS Ildemaro Vargas hit is fourth home-run of the season in the third, a two-run shot.
Double-A Jackson 2 @ Montgomery 3. The Generals did all their scoring in the fourth inning, on an RBI groundout by 2B Jose Vinicio and a single from DH David Sopilka. There were two-hit games for RF Josh Prince and SS Galli Cribbs, while 2B Domingo Leyba drew a trio of walks. Taylor Widener got the start and took a tough loss, allowing three runs over 6.2 innings, on six hits and a walk with three strikeouts. Kevin Ginkel loaded the bases with one out in the eighth, but escaped the jam with a pop-out and a strikeout.
High-A Visalia 5, Stockton 9. The Rawhide also out-hit their opponents in a lot, by a 10-9 margin. But they couldn’t overcome a five-run fourth inning for the Ports. A two-out fielding error by 2B Luis Alejandro Basabe proved particularly costly: a run scored and the next batter hit a three-run homer. Starter Connor Grey only lasted four innings, with three of the seven runs allowed being earned. Tyler Mark and Miguel Aguilar pitched scoreless innings of relief, while 1B Pavin Smith hit his 6th homer; LF Mark Karaviotis doubled and singled.
A-ball Kane County @ Wisconsin. Postponed due to rain.
DSL D-backs. Play started in the Dominican Summer League yesterday, with our two teams splitting their games. The #1 squad gave us our only win of the day, Alex Valdez and two relievers holding the Orioles to a one-hitter. Eric Mendez tossed three hitless innings of relief, with four K’s. LF Carmino Paulino had a pair of hits. The #2 squad was not as lucky, being pounded 10-2 by the Mets, and the pitchers struggled with their control, walking eight. C Sandy Martinez doubled and singled.
