Series Preview #27: D-backs vs. Giants

Following an 8-2 road trip, the Diamondbacks return to the desert to face a surging division rival.

Aside from home cooking and cold pillows, nothing in life is more comforting than a strong week from whatever baseball team you happen to root for. Exacerbate that strong week into an 8-2 road trip and suddenly it’s a lot easier to sleep at night. Considering how tight the NL West has proven to be, the importance of the breathing room this stretch has given the Diamondbacks over the second place Los Angeles Dodgers can’t be overstated.

However, it’s also important to understand just how close behind the Giants are. 5.5 games might seem like a lot, but most of that ground could be made up over the course of these next 3 games. 5.5 becomes 2.5 and suddenly there are two hungry teams breathing down your neck in hopes of snagging the division lead.

The Giants have the talent to make up that ground too. Brandon Crawford is playing out of his mind. Everyone has seen highlight reels of his amazing plays in the field, but this season, his success at the plate is what’s awed baseball fans across the San Francisco Bay Area. Through 275 AB’s Crawford has hit .313 and OPS’d .867 with 9 home runs, 20 doubles, and 2 triples and looks to be an early MVP candidate. Not only that, but Madison Bumgarner has been good off the DL, sporting a 2.51 ERA and a WHIP of 1.02 in just over 32 innings pitched. The rest of the team has been mediocre however, with the teams overall offense sitting in the bottom 5 in the National League and the pitching staff hovering a little above league average.

Starting Pitching Matchups

Game 1: LHP Andrew Suarez (2-4, 4.43 ERA) vs. LHP Patrick Corbin (6-3, 3.24 ERA)

Advantage: D-backs

Game 2: RHP Dereck Rodriguez (2-1, 3.82 ERA) vs. RHP Shelby Miller (0-1, 12.27 ERA)

Advantage: Giants

Game 3: LHP Derek Holland (5-7, 4.24 ERA) vs. RHP Zack Godley (9-5, 4.58 ERA)

Advantage: Even

This series will be all about the offense. If Shelby Miller can flummox the Giants’ offense and the Snakes can figure out Derek Holland — someone they’ve had trouble against this season — 2 out of 3 is almost guaranteed, with a series sweep a definite possibility if the baseball gods feel inclined to smile on us.

How do you think the D-backs will fare against the Giants?
