Oh boy, this series. Growing up an Astros fan and currently living in Houston, my life has had a lot more of this team in it than what is recommended by the box's nutritional information. I'm talking 2, maybe 3 full servings. Dangerous stuff.
The Diamondbacks are in a great position, sitting atop the NL West AND overall NL standings despite, brace yourselves, splitting a series with the NL champion Dodgers dear Lord how horrifying. Sell, sell, sell, boys, season's over, am I right?
Spoiler alert: in a 162 game season, a baseball team will lose many, many games and many, many series. Get over it.
In fact, the incredible Astros team rolling into Chase Field today just got swept at home by the Yankees. The reigning MLB champions, swept. Three losses in a a row. Imagine that.
Moving right along.
When I say this Astros team is incredible, I mean it. Or, the pitching staff is anyway. They lead all of baseball in ERA, innings pitched, earned runs, runs, walks, strikeouts, and batting average against.
Houston's offense has been solid as well: while they don't lead the league in any batting categories, the statistically 6th best offense in all of baseball is nothing to scoff at.
Starting Pitching Matchups
Game 1 : Gerrit Cole (2-1, 1.73) vs. Kris Medlen (Career - 41-25, 3.25)
Advantage - Astros
Game 2: Charlie Morton (4-0, 1.72) vs. Zack Greinke (3-2, 4.50)
Advantage - Astros
Game 3: Justin Verlander (4-0, 1.13) vs. Matt Koch (1-0, 2.37)
Advantage - Astros
Prediction
The D-backs have been ice cold the last two days. If the offense can wake up and the Reno Aces' rotation performs a few miracles, we could be looking at 2 of 3. If not... yikes.
