A sorta pitcher’s duel early, with both Patrick Corbin and Brewers starter Junior Guerra getting through six with only two runs allowed apiece. Corbin started the seventh, but two singles later, the game was turned over to the bullpen, and the wheels once again started to come off the bus.
On the upside, it looks like Steven Souza Jr.’s bat may be starting to come around, as he finished the game 2 for 4 with his first extra-base hit as a Diamondback as well as his first RBI. Also, Goldy got a hit, didn’t strike out at all, and his first two outs were long, hard fly balls to right-center that, on a different sort of night, might have left the park. In addition, Ketel Marte extended his hit streak to six games, and John Ryan Murphy continued to make his case for becoming our everyday catcher as he went 1 for 3 with a walk.
On the downside, Chafin happened in the seventh, Salas happened in the ninth, and AJ Pollock left the game with a possible thumb injury after a diving catch attempt on what turned out to be an inside-the-park home run by Brewers pinch-hitter Tyler Saladino. No word as yet as to how bad it is (or if it’s bad at all, or if his removal from the game was simply precautionary), but still. Ugh.
Full recap will be up as soon as I can bring myself to write it, perhaps fortified by strong drink.
