Arizona Diamondbacks May confidence poll

I think April will be getting a thumbs-up from just about everyone. But do the injuries cloud the confidence picture?

April results

Ok, technically it was still late March, but we wanted to get a feel for things before the regular season started, and see how spring training had affected fan confidence. Turns out, the overall answer is “not very much.” But here’s the breakdown

  • 0% - 1 (not confident in the slightest)
  • 0% - 2
  • 0% - 3
  • 3% - 4
  • 12% - 5
  • 24% - 6
  • 32% - 7
  • 21% - 8
  • 8% - 9 (very, very, VERY confident)

Not one vote less than a four. That’s a first. Even in September 2017, there was a lonely “2” from someone, but on the eve of this war, there were no such Debbie Downers to be found. However, this absence of negativity was balanced out by an increase from 7% to 12% at the “5” level, sucking some votes down from the higher levels, so it was somewhat cautious optimism. Shout-out to megnetic in the comments, who said, “I have a sneaky feeling that they’re going to be really good this year and also that the Dodgers may disappoint their fans.” So far, so good...

Below, you can see the breakdown of voting for the past year. Time progresses from the top down, beginning with the April 2016 poll.

The net result is, as mentioned above, virtually no change. The average confidence came in at 6.82, which is just one-hundredth of a point up on what it was at the beginning of March. This is tied for the smallest monthly change with the first two polls ever, back in Jan-Feb 2016, when confidence ticked down from 6.74 to 6.73. Interesting to note it’s a quarter-point lower than the figure at the same point just before the 2016 season, which was 7.07. That likely measures the PTSD of that campaign. Here’s the chart with all the poll averages.

So... How’s it going? The standings seem to show the Diamondbacks doing very well. This has happened with a quarter of their expected starting line-up and, now, 40% of their Opening Day rotation out of commission. You could argue this in either direction as far as confidence goes. Up? “Think how great we’ll be when we get them back!” Down? “This is going to expose our lack of depth.” Which way do you jump? That’s what the poll below, and the comments section, are for...
