Arizona Diamondbacks 1, Washington Nationals 3

The D-backs lost the game, but likely more importantly, lost Robbie Ray

Starting pitcher Robbie Ray was lifted from the game after only four outs this afternoon, coming out clutching at his side. The team subsequently announced that Ray had a strained right oblique: while the severity is unknown, it appears likely he will miss significant time and stretch the team’s pitching depth further. Braden Shipley might be the most likely replacement. Today, T.J. McFarland again produced bullpen saving work after the early departure of a starter, as he did when we lost Taijuan Walker, and worked 4.2 innings, to keep the D-backs in this one.

The offense wasn’t able to do much against Gio Gonzalez, with a sacrifice fly from Daniel Descalso providing Arizona’s only run. Nick Ahmed had three of the team’s seven hits, and Ketel Marte got a pair of knocks. While unable to complete the sweep, this was still a successful road-trip, with the team going 4-2. They’ll now return to Chase Field for a home stand which just became a bit more challenging.
