TIL about the Gordie Howe hat trick. It’s an ice-hockey variation on the hat-trick, wherein a player scores a goal, records an assist, and gets in a fight all in one game. It is named after Gordie Howe, well known for his skill at both scoring and fighting. Nothing to do with baseball, but it’s kinda interesting. Anyway, Godley has looked not bad so far, tossing 4.2 scoreless innings on three hits, keeping opposing batters to a .188 average. The main area of doubt is a K:BB ratio in that time of only 4:3, so that’s something to keep an eye on this afternoon.
Of particular interest today will be seeing the Angels’ two-way phenom, Shohei Ohtani, who is in their line-up as the DH today. His spring performances have been a bit underwhelming: his sole game on the mound saw him allow a run on two hits (one a homer) and a walk, in 1.1 innings of walk. At the plate, he’s only 1-for-7, but has drawn a couple of walks and only struck out once. Not exactly the second coming of Babe Ruth we were promised... This one is on Fox Sports Arizona, so you’ll get a chance to see what all the fuss is about.
