Yasmany Tomas had initially had a strong spring. Through March 15, he was hitting .423, with an OPS of 1.115, and there was some thought he had done enough to secure a roster spot. While Tomas had slumped of late (going 1-for-15 with eight strikeouts since), that possibility appeared to increase with the injury to Steven Souza opening up an outfield spot. But it appears that the team is looking to put out a strong defensive outfield, perhaps in reaction to the introduction of the humidor at Chase Field this season. If so, then Rey Fuentes may be the beneficiary instead. We’ll see over the remaining four days before the season starts on Thursday.
The move means the Diamondbacks now have 33 players left in camp. The outfielders remaining are Jarrod Dyson, Fuentes, Peralta, A.J. Pollock and Souza (obviously a DL candidate), with perhaps Chris Owings and Daniel Descalso capable of playing positions there if necessary.
