Arizona Diamondbacks make five roster moves

Braden Shipley and Silvino Bracho are the best-known names in this round of cuts.

Optioned to Triple-A Reno:

  • RHP Silvino Bracho
  • RHP Braden Shipley

Reassigned to Minor League camp:

  • RHP Joey Krehbiel
  • OF César Puello

Released:

  • C Josh Thole

The two going to Reno are not much of a surprise. Bracho has continued to suffer from the problems with the long-ball, which have been the main issue throughout his major-league career. In eight spring innings, he has been taken deep four times. Shipley hasn’t seen very much action, appearing only three times: while he has had a decent enough ERA of 3.38, he has likely been overtaken as a potential sixth starter by Matt Koch. The two going to minor-league camp, on the other hand, have both had very good spring. Krehbiel has allowed one run over eight innings, with a K:BB of 6:2, while Puello has a triple-slash of .414/.471/.552 for a 1.022 OPS.

Thole’s departure was no shock either: hitless in 12 Cactus League at-bats, he was simply surpus to requirements. He had been in the D-backs organization for more than a year without playing, having been signed prior to the pre-season in 2017, but missed all of last year after tearing a hamstring in spring training. The cuts here leave the team with 41 players left in camp, and 11 days left until the first game.
