Arizona Diamondbacks trade Brandon Drury, Anthony Banda for OF Steven Souza

There’s the outfield move for which you were waiting.

MLB: Chicago Cubs at Tampa Bay Rays Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

It’s a three-team trade between the Diamondbacks, Yankees and Rays. From what I’ve pieced together off a series of Tweets by various sources, this is what we find (all subject to change!).

  • OF Steven Souza goes from the Rays to the Diamondbacks
  • 2B prospect Nick Solak goes from the Rays to the Yankees
  • 2B Brandon Drury goes from the Diamondbacks to the Yankees
  • SP Anthony Banda goes from the Diamondbacks to the Rays
  • Pitching prospect Taylor Widener goes from the Yankees to the Diamondbacks
  • Two players to be named later will go from the Diamondbacks to the Rays

Souza has mostly been a right-fielder in his time with the Rays, and will presumably fill the same role for Arizona. He hit .239/.351/.459 as a 28-year-old last year: that’s an OPS of 121, mostly thanks to the thirty home-runs he hit. He’s under team control through the end of 2020, was eligible for arbitration for the first time this winter, and agreed to a $3.55 million deal, so the deal will increase our payroll by about $3 million, over the league-minimum amount earned by Drury.

We’ll be unpacking this deal in more detail later on in the day, but for now, I’ll just leave this here.
