You may not know this but someone named Troy Scribner made one start for the Arizona Diamondbacks back on May 12th as an emergency fill-in. Scribner struggled, throwing only 59 of 98 pitches for strikes and left with the bases loaded after 3.2 IP, surrendering 4 hits and 6 walks while striking out 4. Despite loading the bases twice (once in the third and once in the fourth), Scribner managed to only allow 2 runs in a game the Diamondbacks lost to the Washington Nationals and Stephen Strasburg 2-1. Scribner was sent back down to Reno following the game.
The Diamondbacks acquired Scribner off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels in early April and designated Jeremy Hazelbaker to acquire him. Scribner was obviously acquired as an AAA filler and emergency starter though losing Hazelbaker was an interesting decision by the team. Scribner made 8 starts in Reno, with a 5.11 ERA and 6.06 FIP in 44 IP before going down with a shoulder injury in June and eventually released in July. However, Scribner was not claimed by any team and signed back with the team, throwing 6 games between Rookie Ball and low-A, including 4 starts.
From the latest I can tell, Troy Scribner is still a part of the Diamondbacks organization, though he is not on the 40 man roster. There is a very slim chance we’ll see him again depending on our pitching depth next season but there is also a very distinct possibility he won’t be with the organization at all. Scribner did have a 10.0 K/9 against a respectable 3.3 BB/9 across the minors last season so there is a very very small possibility of some sort of breakout, but considering that he isn’t a heralded prospect and has below-average velocity, the odds seem to be against him.
