Arizona Diamondbacks Pitcher of the Year: Nominations

Which five should make it onto the final ballot?

MLB: Spring Training-Arizona Diamondbacks at San Francisco Giants Matt Kartozian-USA TODAY Sports

There’s no doubt that pitching was key to the Diamondbacks’ success in 2017. The team ERA improved from 5.09 to 3.67, year on year. That 1.42 uptick was the largest by Arizona, shattering the previous highest of 1.01 from 2010-11. It meant the D-backs’ ERA went from being the highest in franchise history for 2016, to the very lowest in 2017, beating out the 3.77 figure posted in 1999. As mentioned in the Round Table yesterday, virtually every pitcher improved their figures, a tribute not just to them, but also the Arizona coaching staff and catchers.

We need to find the five candidates who best represent this turnaround. It didn’t take too much looking at the 2017 Diamondbacks to find ten names potentially worth considering for that final ballot would include:

  • Archie Bradley: one of the best relief seasons in franchise history
  • Andrew Chafin: more appearances than anyone else, 137 ERA+
  • Patrick Corbin: resurrected career as starting pitcher
  • Jorge De La Rosa: easily led bullpen in clutch, +188% Win Probability
  • Randall Delgado: only pitcher this year with both a start and a save for Arizona
  • Zack Godley: went from afterthought to essential rotation cog
  • Zack Greinke: led the Diamondbacks in wins, innings pitched and WAR
  • Robbie Ray: led the team in ERA, W% and strikeouts
  • Fernando Rodney: racked up 39 saves, the most for Arizona in six years
  • Jimmie Sherfy: first NL rookie since 2008 to have a zero ERA with more than 10 IP

At least half of the above won’t be on the final ballot, and I’m open to suggestions as to anyone else whom you feel is worthy of consideration. As usual, “recs” will help decided whether any additional candidates are included there. However, fair warning: I will cut the first person who suggests Daniel Descalso. :)
