Arizona Diamondbacks Blown Calls of the Week: September 13-19

Summary

  • Seven games this week, covering the last two games against Colorado, the series in San Francisco, and the first two in San Diego. Exactly the same number of blown calls over exactly the same number of games: 48 bad calls, an average of 6.9. But two-thirds of those came in three games.
  • As has been commonly seen, the pattern reflected a bias toward the home teams. Over the two games in Chase, the margin was a solid 12-5 in favor of the Diamondbacks. But none of the five games in San Francisco and San Diego skewed towards Arizona, with an overall margin of 13-18 against us.
  • The totals for the year
    Overall: 544-606 (46.9% favor the D-backs)
    Home: 277-283 (49.5%)
    Road: 267-323 (45.3%)
  • Best-called game: Sep 16, 2-0 @ SFG (Ben May). There were some solidly called games, but May wins, with only three missed calls, and none of them worse than 22% agreement. Good work.
  • Worst-called game: Sep 14, 7-0 vs. COL (Rob Drake). You were probably too busy enjoying this one to notice the strike-zone, which was a little inconsistent on all four edges. However, the worst call flagged by @DiamondbacksUmp, shown in the game section, was not one which could be found on the Fangraphs chart. So Drake manages to dodge that crown.
  • Worst confirmed call. There were three 0% calls, but none of them could be confirmed by a cross-check on Fangraphs, so we go with one of the (quite numerous) questionable calls from last night, where Ramon De Jesus’s strike-zone seemed to be shifted quite a bit to left, from the pitcher’s perspective.
