It was San Diego who got on the board first, however, Robbie Ray giving up an RBI single in the second. But J.D. Martinez immediately evened the score, launching a long bomb, to the left of the batter’s eye. Paul Goldschmidt then gave the home team the lead, with his 34th of the season, on 30th birthday. A wild pitch proved costly for Robbie Ray in the sixth inning, advancing a Padres from second to third, who then scored on a sac fly. Ray ended the sixth, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks, with a dozen strikeouts.
Martinez again struck back immediately (above), giving Ray the chance of a win with his 21st home-run as a Diamondback, just to the right of the batter’s eye this time. The ball was then turned over to the bullpen. T.J. McFarland and Jimmie Sherfy worked the seventh, and David Hernandez the eighth, each putting up a zero. Today, it was Archie Bradley who got the ninth inning. He merely struck out the side for his first career save.
