Big innings were the story as they either helped or sank the Dbacks minor league affiliates.

Snake Stars:

3 Stars: Hillsboro RHP Kevin McCanna 5 13 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 9 K

2 Stars: Visalia RHP Jose Almonte 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R (1 ER), 3 BB, 8 K, GS 61

1 Star: Reno 2B Kristopher Negron 5 for 5, 2B, RBI, R

Pavin Smith: 2 for 4, 2B, 2 RBI, R

Reno Aces 8, Nashville Sounds 15: Matt Koch turned in a real stinker, allowing 11 runs to score in the first 2 innings. Koch allowed 12 hits with 4 of them leaving the ballpark for a game score of -31. The offense though was able to make it a game by scoring the next 8 runs to make it 11-8, but the bullpen stank although Jared Miller continues to be a bright spot with 4 strikeouts in 2 scoreless innings. Kristopher Negron had a 5 for 5 game at the plate.

Jackson Generals 14, Chattanooga Lookouts 3: The Generals offense broke out in the final 3 innings, which turned a 2-0 deficit into a 14-2 lead after 8 12 innings. The offense could not figure out Twins pitching prospect Kohl Stewart, but once the Lookouts went to the pen, it was feeding time. After scoring 4 runs with nickel and dime hits in the 7th, the offense turns thing up a notch in the 8th inning with a 7-run frame that included Jamie Westbrook hitting a grand slam. Ivan Pineyro allowed 2 runs in 5 innings and took a no decision.

Visalia Rawhide 3, Stockton Ports 1: A pitcher’s duel between Jose Almonte and Angel Duno went the way of the Rawhide thanks to some timely hits in the 8th inning and stellar bullpen work. Almonte gave up 1 run in 5 innings with 8 strikeouts. The Rawhide tied the game thanks to a throwing error in the bottom of the 5th. Colin Poche got the next 4 outs and Ryan Burr the next 5 outs. RBI singles by Jorge Flores and Matt McPhearson gave them a 3-1 lead and Tommy Eveld converted the save with a scoreles 9th inning.

Kane County Cougars 6, Burlington Bees 15: The Cougars actually had a 6-2 lead going into the bottom of the 7th, but a garbage bullpen performance took care of that. Ramon Hernandez had 2 hits, one being a homer, and scored 3 runs for the Cougars. In the bottom of the 7th, Emilio Vargas faced 3 hitters and only got 1 out before turning things over to the bullpen. Mitchell Aker blew a 6-2 lead, failing to get any of the 4 hitters he faced out. Then Trevor Simms allowed a big HR to put the Cougars behind 9-6. Jake Winston and Cal Becker combined to allow 6 runs in the 8th inning to remove any chance of a comeback.

Hillsboro Hops 6, Vancouver Canadians 0: Brian Shaffer, Kevin McCanna, and 2 other relievers combined for a 1-hit shutout of the Canadians. Shaffer struck out 2 in 2 perfect innings. Kevin McCanna went the next 5 13 innings, striking out 9 and allowing 0 hits. Drew Ellis hit his 6th homer of the year, Pavin Smith drove in 2, and Camden Duzenack hit a pair of doubles.

Missoula Osprey 1, Orem Owlz 5: The Osprey fell behind 4-0 in the 1st inning and couldn’t muster enough offense to get back in the game. The Osprey struggled to perform in critical situations as the offense went 1 for 9 with RISP and the Owlz 5 for 9.

AZL Dbacks 1, AZL Royals 5: The Dbacks played a really sloppy game defensively with 4 errors leading to 4 unearned runs scoring. They also struggled offensively, getting only 6 baserunners for the entire game. Harrison Francis struck out 2, but also allowed 2 unearned runs in his pro debut. Buddy Kennedy knocked in the only Dbacks run of the game with an RBI single.
