Pavin Smith: 2 for 4, 2B, BB, 2 RBI, R

Reno Aces 4, Nashville Sounds 3: The Sounds scored 3 runs in the top of the 3rd against Jake Buchanan, but that was all they got. In the bottom of the 4th, home runs by Christian Walker and Willians Astudillo tied the game at 3. Evan Marzilli gave the Aces the lead with a 5th inning sac fly to make Buchanan a winner. Bullpen was fantastic with 2 scoreless from Jared Miller, a scoreless 8th from JJ Hoover, and Silvino Bracho striking out the side in order for the 9th.

Jackson Generals 4, Tennessee Smokies 0: Joel Payamps went the distance in this 7-inning game, shutting out the Smokies on 1 hit with 6 strikeouts. Kevin Cron drove in the first run with an RBI double in the 1st. Marty Herum hit a 2-run double in the 4th and Kelly Dugan added an RBI single in the 5th.

Jackson Generals 3, Tennessee Smokies 7: The second half of the doubleheader didn’t go quite as well as the first game. In a see-saw affair, the Generals and Smokies battled to a virtual stalemate over the first 9 innings of the game. After the Smokies grabbed a 1-0 lead, the Generals scored 2 in the bottom of the 5th to take a 2-1 lead. After that the Smokies scored a run in the 7th and 8th inning to take a 3-2 lead. In the bottom of the 8th, Victor Reyes clubbed his 3rd homer of the year to tie the game at 3. Unfortunately, 4 runs came to score in the top of the 10th inning and that was it.

Visalia Rawhide 7, Stockton Ports 6: Keyed by Austin Byler’s heroics, the Rawhide were able to out-slug the Ports to victory. Byler was in the middle of everything for the Rawhide, contributing to 6 of the 7 runs they scored. Byler hit a 2-run double in the first and scored on a Fernery Ozuna single for the Rawhide to take a 3-0 lead. Cody Reed struggled as he allowed 8 hits and 6 runs (4 earned) in 4 13 innings. However, the Rawhide were able to get him off the hook with stellar relief pitching from Colin Poche and Austin Mason. In the 7th, Jorge Flores homered to make it 6-4 and Austin Byler provided the knockout blow with a 2-out, 3-run homer to give the Rawhide the 7-6 lead. Yoan Lopez got the final 5 outs, 4 by strikeout, for his 2nd save.

Kane County Cougars 6, Cedar Rapids Kernels 1: The Cougars didn’t put up big numbers on the scoreboard, but the offense was relentless overall. The offense picked up 15 hits, so they didn’t need to hit on too many opportunities to be successful at the plate. They overcame a 2 for 13 with RISP clip with solo jacks from Adam Walton and Ramon Hernandez. If you can’t get the big hit, hit a big fly, right? Mack Lemieux benefitted from the offensive outburst, allowing just 1 run in 6 innings, making the big pitch with guys in scoring position. The bullpen fired 3 scoreless innings behind him to preserve the win.

Hillsboro Hops 9, Vancouver Indians 8: The Hops quickly fell behind 8-0 after awful pitching in the 2nd inning, but a strong bullpen and offense erased that deficit and turned it into a win. The Hops chipped away with 3 runs in the 3rd and 4 in the 5th before tying things at 8 in the 8th with an RBI single from Ryan Dobson. In the 11th, the Hops cashed in on a leadoff walk by Dobson with a sacrifice bunt followed by a walkoff single by Camden Duzenack, who had a 3-hit, 3 RBI game. Pavin Smith drove in 2 and hit his 9th double of the season.

Missoula Osprey 2, Orem Owlz 4: Missed opportunities and bad baseball haunted the Osprey in this one. The team committed 4 errors and had 4 runners thrown out on the bases. James Johnson allowed 1 run in 5 innings despite more walks than strikeouts. The Osprey picked up a 2-0 lead thanks to RBI singles by Gabriel Maciel and Andy Yerzy and Johnson allowed that lead to stand before turning things over to the bullpen. Unfortunately, the 8th inning the Osprey suddenly forgot how to play baseball as 4 errors led to 3 runs scoring. That Osprey defense that inning can be appropriately summoned in this one GIF.

AZL Dbacks Off Day or Rainout: Not sure if there was supposed to be a scheduled game, although if there was you probably know what happened to that game if you were in Arizona last night.
