Diamondbacks and Cubs bullpens amuse themselves during rain delay

As Ryan Wheeler told us earlier this week, relief pitchers are a special breed. Evidence for this today from Wrigley.

There’s a saying in football - no, the other one - that you have to be insane to be a goalkeeper. I’m beginning to suspect the same may be true of relief pitchers. Or maybe it’s just that sitting around the bullpen with a lot of spare time in your hands, lends itself to shenanigans. When J.J. Putz was down there for us, he always had a reputation as a prankster (see below) - that has continued, even though he’s now part of the Diamondbacks’ front-office.

His legacy appears intact, based on the weirdness that unfolded during this afternoon’s second rain delay between the Cubs and Diamondbacks at Wrigley Field. Amongst other things, an impromptu dance competition appears to have broken out between the teams, though I am also very impressed by the handstand skills of T.J. McFarland. I’d nominate him to be our representative on American Ninja Warrior.

Of course, it wasn’t long before we returned to the serious business of taking on the Cubs. But it was nice to see the guys are loose and capable of having fun, even during a very important series.
