Arizona Diamondbacks Blown Calls of the Week: July 19-25

A relatively quiet week on the umpiring front. If we didn’t notice them, that’s a good thing, right?

Summary

  • 51 bad calls in total, an average of 7.3 per game - considerably lower than the 11 per game managed last week! The first two were on the road, and went 6-10 against Arizona. The remaining five were at Chase Field and also saw the majority of the calls huring us, by a 16-20 margin.
  • The totals for the year
    Overall: 372-412 (47.4% favor the D-backs)
    Home: 201-195 (50.8%)
    Road: 171-217 (44.1%)
  • Best-called game: July 24, 10-2 vs. ATL (Alfonso Marquez). Just edging out Brian Knight in the opener of the Washington series, which had the same number of bad calls and over more pitches - but they were slightly worse, which is the usual tie-breaker. It’s interesting to note how Marquez didn’t have the same issues we saw in the last report, when an R.A. Dickey game was responsible for the worst call of the week. Here, only one of his calls even involved Dickey. Mind you, Dickey was SO wild on Monday, pretty much anyone could have called the balls there...
  • Worst-called game: July 22, 3-4 vs. WSN (Lance Barrett). The problems here were mostly at the bottom of the zone, and to the left, though all four corners helped contribute to Barrett’s hefty total of 13 blown calls.
  • Worst confirmed call. This came in Anthony Banda’s debut, and was a generous strike call during his first time facing Bryce Harper, after the first two pitches had missed the zone. Though given Harper ended up homering on a full-count pitch, we would likely have been better off if this call hadn’t gone our way, and Harper had walked instead!

Not technically the worst call reported in this game by @DiamondbacksUmp, but I am going to discard this one as an obvious mechanical error. Even R.A. Dickey on Monday night wasn’t missing the strike zone by that much...
