Diamondbacks Minor League Recap 7/1/17: Big hop

Hillsboro Hops trounced the Everett Aqua Sox.

Snake Stars:

3 Stars: Hillsboro LF Dan Swain: 2 for 4, 2 2B, BB, SB, RBI, R

2 Stars: Kane County CF Anfernee Grier 2 for 4, 2 2B, BB, 3 R

1 Star: Kane County LHP Mack Lemieux 6 IP, 4 H, 2 R (2 ER), 1 BB, 4 K, GS 58, W (3-2)

0 Stars: Missoula RHP Gabe Gonzalez 1 IP, 3 H, 4 R (4 ER), 1 BB, 1 K

Yasmany Tomas rehab: 1 for 2, 2B. Left game in 5th (“general tightness”).

Pavin Smith: 1 for 5, 2 R

Reno Aces rained out: Unfortunately that means no Pollock although he will get a rehab game tomorrow for sure. I was initially thinking he’s back for the LA series, but that’s starting to look iffy.

Jackson Generals off day

Visalia Rawhide 4, Stockton Ports 5: Bo Takahashi has come down to earth a bit, this time surrendering 4 runs over 6 innings, but did post a 6/0 K/BB so that’s a case of him being beaten throwing strikes. The offense was able to plate 4 runs early thanks to a 2-run triple by Matt McPhearson in the 3rd and a solo homer by Tyler Baker in the 4th. Unfortunately, Tommy Eveld was unable to pitch a scoreless 8th and paid for 2 walks by allowing the decisive run.

Kane County Cougars 10, Peoria Chiefs 2: The Cougars brought the whooping sticks to the yard and obliterated the Chiefs. Anfernee Grier double twiced and walked and Mark Karaviotis went 5 for 5 at the plate. That was more than enough support for Mack Lemieux, who allowed 2 runs over 6 strong innings (see above). Aside from Raymel Flores, who went 0 for 5, the entire Cougars lineup recorded at least one hit and one run scored or one RBI.

Hillsboro Hops 11, Everett Aqua Sox 2: The game was a one-sided affair from the get-go as the Hops scored 4 times in the first inning and never looked back. Riley Smith allowed just 2 runs over 6 innings, removing any possible chance of a comeback. Dan Swain had an impressive pro debut with a pair of doubles, a walk, and a stolen base in 5 PA. Every Hops hitter got a hit except Connor Owings, who drove in a run with a sac fly and walked so we can say everyone contributed offensively.

Missoula Osprey 1, Helena Brewers 11: The Osprey struggled to hit with guys on base and hit when it really mattered, going 0 for 8 with RISP and stranding 10. The game started off as a scoreless pitcher’s duel through 4 innings before errors led to 5 runs scoring in the top of the 5th. Unfortunately, the pitching allowed 11 runs in the 5th-7th innings and the lack of offense really hurt the Osprey.

AZL Dbacks 2, AZL Royals 3: Wesley Rodriguez struck out 5 over 3 innings, allowing just a solo homer. Trailing 2-0, the Dbacks plated a run in the 6th and 7th inning, with a rehabbing Jamie Westbrook homering to tie the game at 2. Unfortunately, Casey Kulina allowed 1 run in the top of the 9th inning for the loss. Yasmany Tomas went 1 for 2 with a double, but got lifted for a pinch runner with a situation the Diamondbacks are calling general tightness.
