GM Mike Hazen talks about new D-back, J.D. Martinez

Here's GM Mike Hazen discussing the Arizona Diamondbacks' acquisition of outfielder J.D. Martinez from the Tigers this afternoon.

Here are a few quick highlights:

  • It came together over the last week or so.
  • Felt Martinez was a good fit for us, given where we currently stand.
  • The team’s issues with LHP weren’t the only or major reason.
  • The longer time-frames for the recovery of Nick Ahmed and Yasmany Tomas did help push the team in the direction of making a trade.
  • Not looking at any extension beyond this season, we’re 100% focused on this year.
  • Felt like we had decent depth at the areas on the farm from which we were trading.
  • The recent losing streak did not make any difference. They’ve been working on this plan for a long time.
  • The team have more irons in the fire, but there’s nothing imminent at this point.
  • The D-backs expect him to play the majority of the time, but haven’t had the opportunity to figure out line-up positions, etc. yet.
  • Ken Kendrick was very supportive through the whole process and allowed Arizona to go out and be aggressive.
