Arizona Diamondbacks: July Confidence poll

Quite forgot about this in all the excitement. But the All-Star break is a good point at which to take the consensus of opinion.

June 1 results

Another month’s worth of games down, and May had gone even better than the unexpected pleasures of April. The Diamondbacks went 17-11, though managed to spend only one day in May in first place, thank to the relentless progress made by the Los Angeles Dodgers. Did that perhaps dampen the increase in confidence? Here are the results from the beginning of June.

  • 2% - 1 (not confident in the slightest)
  • 2% - 2
  • 1% - 3
  • 3% - 4
  • 9% - 5
  • 19% - 6
  • 34% - 7
  • 19% - 8
  • 12% - 9 (very, very, VERY confident)

There was still something of an uptick. The main changes were drops at the 6 and 7 levels, with the votes moving higher, into the 8 and 9 categories. Indeed, we have an all-tine high for the “very, very, VERY confident” group. At 11.5% of votes, it beats the previous best of 10.3%, set in March 2016. At the other end the percentage across the bottom five categories combined was completely unchanged, at 17%. I guess even the best start in franchise history can’t please some people! Here’s the chart for the previous year’s voting breakdown.

Where we stand

The overall result is a slight tick up in confidence, although the leap is much smaller than the previous month. We increase from 6.57 to 6.70, which still puts us fractionally behind the scores for all of the 2016 pre-season, which peaked at 7.07 on Opening Day. Of course, it was all downhill from there... Below, you can see how things have ebbed and flowed over the past 18 months.

This month’s poll

It will be interesting to see how things break for the July poll. Probably a bit worse than they would have, if I’d had the poll on July 1, as the D-backs had just completed their best month of the season, going 17-9. But since then, we’ve been swept in LA and lost a series to the Reds, and are only 3-5 in July. However, the team still sits very comfortably in the first wild-spot, and every game crossed off the schedule going forward will be an increasingly significant boost to our chances. It will be particularly useful to compare this vote’s results, with the one on August 1st, after the passing of the trade deadline.
