The Arizona Diamondbacks recalled RHP Zack Godley and OF Jeremy Hazelbaker from Triple-A Reno, placed OF Yasmany Tomás on the 10-day disabled list (right groin tendinitis) retroactive to June 3, and optioned RHP Braden Shipley to Reno.
Godley, 27, is 1-1 with a 2.39 ERA (10 ER in 37.2 IP) with a .220 opponents average in 6 starts for the D-backs this season. He has allowed 3 earned runs or fewer in each of his 6 starts with Arizona, including 2 or fewer 4 times. Hazelbaker, 29, was hitting .329 (28-for-85) with 6 doubles, 2 triples, 5 home runs and 15 RBI in 22 games with the Aces this season. He made the D-backs’ Opening Day roster, and hit .308 (8-for-26) with 1 double, 1 triple, 1 home run and 5 RBI in 21 games before being optioned on May 4.
Tomás, 26, is batting .241 (40-for-166) with 11 doubles, 8 home runs and 32 RBI in 47 games for Arizona this season. Shipley, 25, is 0-1 with a 7.00 ERA (7 ER in 9.0 IP) in 2 starts for the D-backs in 2017.
Tomas has been dealing with a groin issue for a few days, with his last appearance being on June 2. Because of this DL move, it allows the team to pull Zack Godley back from the minor-leagues, without having to wait the statutory 10 days. Of course, the real replacement for Tomas is Hazelbaker, who performed well in his first stint with the team, posting a line of .308/.379/.538, though only four of his 21 appearances were as a starter.
The return of Godley is interesting. Is Taijuan Walker’s DL stint going to continue running longer than expected? Will Randall Delgado be going back to the bullpen? Or is this, as many have hoped, the prelude to Patrick Corbin being bumped from the Diamondbacks’ rotation? We’ll find out in the coming days...
