The D-backs franchise and their players have been flying below the radar in terms of national attention for a long time. I think the 2001 World Series was likely the last time the team as a whole occupied a significant place in consciousness [I haven’t been able to locate viewing figures for the 2007 NLCS against the Rockies, but I’m guessing they weren’t good] There’s some justification for this, because the team has spent most of the time since then not being very good. Arizona has reached even 85 wins only three times over those 15 seasons, in 2002, 2007 and 2011.
But things may be changing, with Jake Lamb featured in a commercial for a national company, Pepsi Cola. He’s likely the natural candidate for this kind of thing: amazing though Paul Goldschmidt is, he’s not the kind of guy who is likely going to agree to be the fact of a mega-corporation. He’d far rather go about his job. And, having seen some woeful adverts, I can’t blame him. Hello, Brian Wilson. Hello, Randy Johnson’s Right Guard commercial, featuring him playing dodgeball against body odor. Goldy is perhaps wise to remain above such things.
This, however, is entirely harmless, simply featuring Lamb doing what he does best: swinging a bat. Is is enough to make me start drinking Pepsi? We’ll see...
Must feel nice to throw down that bat in a rain of confetti. Watch @JakeLamb18 get that pure piñata joy. pic.twitter.com/nqdbeZYmmq
