Diamondbacks 7, Tigers 6: Offense bails out the defense

This game should have been nowhere near this close

The first inning didn’t have the best start for the Diamondbacks. Gregor Blanco was hitting lead off and got a single. However, he tried to take second as David Peralta was striking out and was thrown out for a double play.

That wouldn’t set the tone for the rest of the inning, thankfully. Paul Goldschmidt and Jake Lamb both singled, to bring Chris Owings to the plate with two outs. He bunted for a hit to third, plating Goldy, moving Lamb to second, and reaching first himself. Brandon Drury hit a single of his own to bring home Lamb, making increasing the lead to two.

They added four more in the third. Goldschmidt brought home Peralta on a two run homer, and then Brandon Drury brought home Lamb with a two run shot of his own.

Meanwhile, Zach Grienke was throwing phenomenally. Through the first five innings, he kept the Tigers scoreless, and only allowed one walk and two hits. He was just simple cruising, with only 81 pitches going into the sixth...

And then it all fell apart. Kinsler hit a one out single. He scored when Avila hit a ground ball to short that Owings threw away. Avila scored when Cabrera doubled on a fly ball that should have been a catch by Peralta. Grienke got Victor Martinez to strike out for the second out. However, he gave up a home run to J.D. Martinez. He gave up a walk to Justin Upton and Luvello pulled him in favor of J.J. Hoover after that.

Hoover gave up three straight singles, the last two of which were for an RBI each. He finally got Kinsler to fly out and finally end the inning, but not before a six run lead completely evaporated.

The Diamondbacks tried to come back in the eighth, but not much came of it. Drury hit a lead off double, just one base short of the triple he needed for the cycle. Descalso walked. Rey Fuentes singled to load the bases. Chris Herrmman came in to pinch hit for starting catcher Jeff Mathis. He had put up a tough at bat, but it ended in possibly the worst way imaginable. Herrmann grounded the ball to Miguel Cabrera at first, who gunned Drury down at home in time for the catcher Avila to throw it back to first to complete the double play. Blanco flew out and the inning was over.

Justin Wilson came on to pitch for the Tigers in the top of the ninth with the game tied. David Peralta hit his first pitch into the stands to break the tie and give the Diamondbacks a lead. Fernando Rodney closed it out and sealed the win.

A game that doesn't involve a six run blown lead: David Peralta, 43.5%
A six run blown leadJ.J. Hoover -28.1, Chris Herrmann, -27.5

Funny thing how that works sometimes. Peralta had two bad plays in the game and had a large part of responsibility for the six run sixth, but one swing of the bat completely turned that around. Very busy GDT with over 1100 comments. DC broke 200, Justin27 had 160, I finished the night right at 100, and MichaelMcD just missed a hundred with 95. All present were:

I like that. Next game is still against the Tigers at 4:10 Arizona Time. Probably is going to be another pretty great game, so you should join us if you can.
