Arizona Diamondbacks: May Confidence poll

Now with actual, meaningful games to which we can react!

April 1 results

We polled you just before the start of the regular season, after a spring training which had gone reasonably well, and been largely injury free. On the eve of the 2017 MLB campaign getting underway, this is how the results came in:

  • 2% - 1 (not confident in the slightest)
  • 6% - 2
  • 12% - 3
  • 10% - 4
  • 19% - 5
  • 25% - 6
  • 16% - 7
  • 3% - 8
  • 8% - 9 (very, very, VERY confident)

The 4-7 range was almost identical to the March results: “5” and “6” actually were the same, with “4” and “7” a tick down. But there was a shift from those below that middle range, to those above. In the previous month 25% were at “3” or below. That dropped to 20%, and the numbers at “8” or better, spiked from 4% to 11%. Here’s the last year of individual results, in graphical form.

I wonder if we’ll always see a surge of enthusiasm at the end of spring training? We’ll probably need a few more years of data to be sure, but the increase of 0.39 in the overall confidence index is roughly in line with the uptick of 0.24 posted in the March-April slot for 2016. It may be that, seeing actual baseball games, and all the hope of being level in the standings with everyone else, helps act as an appetizer for the 162-game main course. For confidence on the eve of Opening Day reached 5.37, which is the highest it has been among D-backs fans since the same point last year.

It wouldn’t surprise me if this month’s poll shows a further increase, on the back of our best April record since 2008, when many (myself included!) were expecting a struggle out of the gate, thanks to a tough schedule. But there are reasons for caution as well: we’ve lost Shelby Miller for the year, and the struggles of Fernando Rodney have likely cost the Diamondbacks a couple of wins.
