Narrated by Roger Clyne, of D-backs Swing fame, it starts off by proclaiming, “Arizona: It takes a special type of strength to make it here,” then goes through the history of summer in the state. It’s a nice mix of nostalgia and foreshadowing, pointing out that only now, are we just getting to the point where we have adults who don’t remember a time when the D-backs weren’t part of life here. “In my day, we didn’t have the Churro Dog or Legends Race.”
There’s a selection of iconic moments and characters from team history, including Greg Schulte, the flag lady and the bird sent “to the pearly gates” by Randy Johnson. There may even be an apparent dig at a certain ESPN pundit, with Paul Goldschmidt described as “a prospect once labeled average”. Clyne concludes, “It’s no accident the first word of our victory anthem is ‘summer’. That might make some people cringe, but around here, summer is our season.”
Here’s to a summer with another 161 games, just like yesterday’s.
