Arizona Diamondbacks announce 25-man Opening Day roster

These are the men who will be representing the team on Sunday at Chase Field.

23 of the spots had been decided before tonight’s game, but it wasn’t after it had finished that word officially came down, with the team announcing the following moves:

Optioned to Triple-A Reno:

  • RHP Silvino Bracho

Placed on the Disabled List

  • RHP Jake Barrett - 10-day (right shoulder inflammation)
  • LHP Steve Hathaway - 10-day (left shoulder inflammation)

This means that the final two roster spots went to Andrew Chafin, and Jeremy Hazelbaker. The former isn’t much of a surprise, as the team had been wanting a left-hander alongside Jorge De La Rosa. The latter is slightly more so, though Torey Lovullo seemed to imply just now it was always going to be the case. Hazelbaker had an awful spring, posting a line of .189/.232/.208 over 25 games, and there were a few people who thought the team might go with an 8-man bullpen, and just use Chris Owings and/or Chris Herrman as backup outfielders. Lovullo did say Owings will play in right, though he will be the regular shortstop. So, Hazelbaker it is, and we’ll be hoping for much better from him, once the regular season starts.

Here’s the full 25-man roster. Numbers are in regard to the player’s position in our pre-season rankings, and the links go to that page.
