Diamondbacks 15, Mariners 6: The End (of the Cactus League)

Every end marks a new beginning, they say, and once again this proves true. Today’s game was the last official Cactus League game, and after two exhibition games at Chase Field, Real Baseball begins!

MLB: Spring Training-Chicago Cubs at Arizona Diamondbacks Rick Scuteri-USA TODAY Sports

Now, fair warning, I was unable to watch this game, due to that horrible scourge on humanity known as the need to make money so I can eat. All that follows is basically the novelization of the box score. Please forgive any mistakes.

Brandon Drury and the Diamondbacks wasted little time getting on the board this afternoon in Peoria. However, the this lead would not last for long. Grienke gave up a double to Jean Segura, followed by a bunt single to Mitch Haniger to put runners on the corners. The game was tied up thanks to a Robinson Cano sac fly, to bring home Segura. 1-1

Quick innings by both pitcher in the second left the game tied. Felix Hernandez was pulled after completing the second inning, which seems odd to me at this point in spring training, but no one on the internet seems concerned, so I guess it was planned? The bullpen took it the rest of the way from there.

In the third inning both teams got on the board again. The Dbacks put up one run, thanks to a Grienke single and a Peralta triple. The Mariners scored two. Segura singled, Haniger doubled him home, and then Nelson Cruz doubled him home. 3-2 Mariners

Then all hell broke loose. The Dbacks scored five runs in the fourth, two in the fifth, one in the sixth, and then just because another five spot in the eighth. Grienke finished his day with 4 IP, 6 H, 3 R, all earned, and no walks or strike outs, which isn’t terrible? I guess?

No FanGraphs, because it’s spring training, but here is an artist’s best guess

Great Player! Kristopher Negron, a big percentage!

Good Player! AJ Pollock, a slightly smaller percentage!

Not so great player! Zach Grienke, a negative percentage :(
