Let’s see if we can avoid allowing four or five runs in the first, shall we?

Diamondbacks line-up

  1. A.J. Pollock CF
  2. Brandon Drury 2B
  3. Paul Goldschmidt 1B
  4. Jake Lamb 3B
  5. Chris Owings RF
  6. Daniel Descalso LF
  7. Chris Iannetta C
  8. Ketel Marte SS
  9. Shelby Miller RHP

Miller was the subject of a very interesting article on Fangraphs today, which concluded, “If the Shelby Miller who throws 97 and strikes everyone out shows up in the regular season, this deal can become a lot less painful for Arizona.” But he was also covered in a less sabermetric piece by Paolo Boivin in the Republic which concluded with this quote from manager Torey Lovullo:

“What I can evaluate and what I do know is, when I’m watching his bullpens, they’re energized, they’re focused, they’re productive and my interactions with him personally have been very upbeat and realistic. So I think he’s in a really good place. What I think it’s taught him is it’s helped him to grow as a player, and young players need those moments, whether it be successful or hardships, and in this case, we know what he went through. I know it’s been a tough grind for him to get to this point. He wants to go out and prove himself and earn everything that he possibly can.”

Few things would indicate more dramatically that the D-backs have turned the corner under new management than a working Shely Miller. Fingers crossed that is indeed what we get this season.

This one’s apparently on Fox Sports Arizona - it’s a Fox Sports West production. Not that you’d actually know it from the official team broadcast schedule...
