The Official SnakePit Super Bowl thread

Or Puppy Bowl. Or Kitten Bowl. For we’re nothing if not inclusive here...

This is one of the few occasions when we will not only allow, but actively encourage discussion of another sport in this location. For the Super Bowl is unique in a whole number of ways: for example, it’s the only program where we fast-forward in order to GET to the adverts. Yeah, to describe Mrs. SnakePit and me as "utterly disinterested" would be putting it mildly.

Virtually all I know about this year’s event is the memes on Facebook, and based on that, it appears people are mostly either rooting for the Patriots, or against them - I’m not sure I’ve seen anyone rooting for the... [pauses to Google this, just to be safe] Falcons. Who are, I believe, from Atlanta. As someone totally oblivious to the NFL, is this dislike of the Pats a bit like the Yankee hatred in the 2000’s? They’ve clearly been uber-successful over the past few seasons, so are the Pats the bandwaggoning team of choice? Or is there more to it? Explanations welcome. Though, yes: I have heard the political angle. Let’s not go there. That’s why there is Facebook, people.

We will be watching it for the commercials, though the appeal of this has been lessened over the last few years, since virtually all of them are released online in advance of the event. Which makes it a bit like watching the game on tape delay, after you’ve heard the final score. Mrs S. is also looking forward to the half-time show starring Lady Gaga, about which I am personally neutral leaning benign. She has a good sense of visual style and I can at least hum some of her songs (unlike Bruno frickin’ Mars) which is about all you can hope for from a half-time show. At least until they get ABBA.

Anyway, have an open thread to tell us who you’re rooting for and why, discuss the commercials, the game, the half-time show, or any of the bets on which you can wager this afternoon - samples below, full list here.
