Predict the D-backs Opening Day Roster: The picks

Last week, we asked you to predict who’d be on the D-backs Opening Day roster. Who did you go for?

There were seven groups: we divided the 40-man roster into five blocks, from most to least likely, and the non-roster invitees formed the sixth group. You had to pick two from each of these, and then add a seventh wild-card selection not included in the first six groups, for 13 players overall. That whole “not included” thing proved extraordinarily difficult for some people to grasp, as we’ll see. But here are the picks. We had 58 entries: one person entered twice, but was honest enough to ‘fess up. :) So, there was a maximum number of 57 votes for each player. Here’s how many times each of the 56 candidates were actually selected, with the top two in bold.

Group A - Dead-certs (2 x 1 point)

  • Socrates Brito - 3
  • Andrew Chafin - 17
  • Randall Delgado - 33
  • Zack Godley - 3
  • Phil Gosselin - 4
  • Jeff Mathis - 32

Group D - Possibles (2 x 4 points)

  • Silvino Bracho - 8
  • Archie Bradley - 43
  • Steve Hathaway - 6
  • Jeremy Hazelbaker - 15
  • Tyler Jones - 11

  • Gregor Blanco - 38
  • Erik Davis - 0
  • Rubby De La Rosa - 32
  • Miller Diaz - 0
  • Reymond Fuentes - 0
  • Daniel Gibson - 2
  • J.J. Hoover - 7
  • Joey Krehbiel - 7
  • Jared Miller - 21
  • Yuhei Nakaushiro - 1
  • Kristopher Negron - 0
  • Jason Pridie - 1
  • Keyvius Sampson - 2
  • Josh Taylor - 0
  • Josh Thole - 3

Group G - Wild-card (1 x 8 points)

As mentioned, amazing how many people punted this category, either deliberately or not grasping the concept. No, Brandon Drury is not eligible. Neither are Andrew Chafin, Robbie Ray or Chris Iannetta - no matter how you spell his name. Those three all received multiple nominations, and there were a number of other suggestions that will not be receiving any points at all.

Of the qualifying answers, more than one person went for the following: David Hernandez, Fernando Salas (that one seems to have just been crossed out), Joe Blanton, Matt Wieters and Craig Breslow. So it seems there are quite a few people that are expecting Mike Hazen to go for an extra bullpen arm, of some sort or other.

Now, all that’s left is to wait, and see how the next seven weeks unfold, before we revisit this once the Opening Day roster is announced...
