The Cactus League begins this afternoon at Salt River Fields!

MLB: Colorado Rockies-Workouots Matt Kartozian-USA TODAY Sports

Diamondbacks lineup

  1. A.J. Pollock, CF
  2. David Peralta, RF
  3. Paul Goldschmidt, 1B
  4. Jake Lamb, 3B
  5. Yasmany Tomas, RF
  6. Brandon Drury, 2B
  7. Ketel Marte, DH
  8. Nick Ahmed, SS
  9. Jeff Mathis, C
    + Shelby Miller, P

And, yay, the line-up card this time managed to spell both Pollock and Tomas correctly - though we discover both the penmanship and any spelling errors are apparently due to Reno Aces’ manager and temporary bench coach for the D-backs, Jerry Narron.

Peralta gets his first action of the year, having apparently addresses his citizenship issues in Florida. Interesting to see him hitting in the two-hole, between Pollock and Goldschmidt. As with the game against GCU, this feels not dissimilar to what we could end up seeing on Opening Day - perhaps an Owings for Ahmed swap away, in terms of position players. Although as there, I also suspect most of the above won’t be hanging around for too long this afternoon.

The Miller question will be foremost on everyone’s minds this spring. While pre-season stats have little or no predictive value, it is perhaps worth noting that Shelby’s struggles did begin before Opening Day last year. In six spring starts, he had a 4.79 ERA, with a K:BB of 14:9 in 20.2 innings. That 1.56 K:BB ratio last Cactus League is not far off the 1.67 he posted during the regular season, and the .363 on-base percentage given up was also much closer to the .374 figure Miller allowed, once games counted, than his career number had been to that point (.305). So, while I stress caution, it’s something perhaps to watch, this afternoon and on through March.

This one is on the radio, Arizona Sports 98.7 FM having the call, so presuming it’ll be the first time in 2017 that we get to hear the dulcet tones of Greg Schulte and Tom Candiotti bringing us action.
