This one should be fairly easy to figure out. I mean who isn’t going to vote for everyone’s favorite 6’10”, 102 MPH throwing monster who also follows that up with the nastiest slider you’ll ever see from a LHP. But I will put up a 2nd token candidate just to see if anyone is crazy enough to actually vote for that person. Let’s begin:
Randy Johnson: 1998 was the year the Diamonbacks came into existence, 1999 was the year they announced their presence to the baseball world. Signing a giant LHP out of California coming off the best 12 start run of his career, the Diamondbacks went for broke and I’d say that move paid off. Johnson won 4 Cy Young awards in a row and a World Series Co-MVP, while Diamondbacks fans were treated to the privilege of watching arguably the best LHP of all time in his prime. Johnson is the only player to represent the Diamondbacks in the MLB Hall of Fame, his #51 retired by the team in 2016. Barring some major circumstances, you can argue that RJ was the best player to ever suit up as a Diamondback.
Patrick Corbin: Here’s the sacrificial Lamb for the sake of having more than one choice. Corbin was acquired in a deadline deal in 2010 and quickly developed into a key player for the Diamondbacks by 2013. Tommy John surgery and the recovery from that probably hurts his value, but in 2017 he was 100% healthy and a big cog to the Diamondbacks down the stretch. His fastball and slider aren’t quite in the Randy Johnson tier, but they’re very effective pitches for him.
