We will, of course, be giving the Diamondbacks’ game its own playoff thread when the time comes. But there’s no shortage of post-season baseball today, this being one of the rare occasions - what with staggered off-days and all - when you can probably watch close to 12 consecutive hours of playoff games. If you have the day off, or have a particularly forgiving boss, that is! Here’s the schedule for the day, all times Arizona.
11:05 am - Boston Red Sox @ Houston Astros (Astros 1-0)
Drew Pomeranz (17-6, 3.32) vs. Dallas Keuchel (14-5, 2.90). The Red Sox and Chris Sale were pummeled in the series opener yesterday, with Jose Altuve hitting three home-runs as the Astros cruised to victory. They won’t want to go back to Boston starting elimination in the face, but will have their work cut out against Keuchel, who has a 2.26 ERA over 11 starts this year at Minute Maid Park.
2:05pm - New York Yankees @ Cleveland Indians (Indians 1-0)
C.C. Sabathia (14-5, 3.69) vs. Corey Kluber (18-4, 2.25). Rather than starting their ace in the opener, the Indians went with Trevor Bauer, and still came up trumps. Bauer and two relievers combined on a three-hit shutout of the Yankees, the Indians winning 4-0. Aaron Judge collected a golden sombrero and #1-4 in the New York line-up went 0-for-15 with seven strikeouts. They’ll need to do better today, obviously!
5:35pm - Chicago Cubs @ Washington Nationals (0-0)
Kyle Hendricks (7-5, 3.03) vs. Stephen Strasburg (15-4, 2.52). The Cubs begin their playoff quest to repeat in our nation’s capital. Strasburg struck out 13 Cubs over seven innings when he faced them on June 28, and hasn’t lost to Chicago since 2013; Hendricks took a tough loss vs. the Nationals on August 4. We should watch this, to see who we’ll be playing in the Championship Series. Yeah, I went there...
7:35pm - Arizona Diamondbacks @ Los Angeles Dodgers (0-0)
More on that to come. :)
