What a difference a month makes. After a wobbly start to the second half, and a real disaster of a series in Minnesota, the team reeled off a franchise record thirteen consecutive wins, and didn’t just hold onto pole position for the NL wild-card, they consolidated their lead. As a result, by the time of our poll (which was started a little later than usual, on Sep 10), the team were five games clear of the Rockies, with Fangraph giving them playoff odds of a crisp 99.9%. That was reflected in a massive confidence boost in the results, which were as follows (196 votes total):
- 0% - 1 (not confident in the slightest)
- 1% - 2
- 0% - 3
- 2% - 4
- 0% - 5
- 5% - 6
- 26% - 7
- 37% - 8
- 30% - 9 (very, very, VERY confident)
The gloomy Gusses were all but eradicated, with only 2% voting less than six (it’s a rounding thing, in case you were wondering: the 1% was actually 0.51%, and the 2% is 1.53%). At the other end, there are record high figures of support for both 8 and 9 categories, surpassing the previous bests of 25% and 15%, both of which had been set on Opening Day 2016. A total of 93% voted 7 or better, also a new high (the previous being 76%, again in April last year).
Below, you can see the breakdown of voting for the past year. Time progresses from the top down, beginning with the October 2016 poll.
You will therefore not be surprised to hear that the overall mark also was an all-time high in the 21 months we’ve been taking the state of D-backs fandom. The Opening Day 2016 figure had been the best, at 7.07, but the September 2017 crushed that by more than three-quarters of a point, reaching 7.84. Here’s the rise and fall over the year and three quarters of this feature.
This month’s poll
The season is over, and the D-backs have duly completed a largely unexpected run to the 2017 post-season, improving their record by 24 games on last year, and capturing the first NL wild-card spot. They’ll place the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday, in a winner-takes-all game for the right to face the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL Division Series. But where does fan confidence sit, as we brace ourselves for the pure, undiluted drama of the wild-card game. Are the doubts over the bullpen, Paul Goldschmidt and injury concerns for Ketel Marte and David Peralta going to dampen enthusiasm? Or is it full steam ahead into the playoffs?
Here’s the poll. As usual, explain yourself in the comments, especially if you have changed your score from last time.
How confident are you about the Diamondbacks?
