Playoff Gameday Thread #8: Nats on the brink (rain permitting)

After a Game 1 win, Washington looked set fair. Now? Not so much.

2:38 pm: Washington Nationals @ Chicago Cubs (Cubs 2-1)

Tanner Roark (13-11, 4.67) vs. Jake Arrieta (14-10, 3.53). It has been 36 years since the franchise last advanced in the post-season. Of course, a large chunk of that is the spell - over 30 years! - between 1981 and 2012 when they didn’t make the post-season at all. This also covered the time when they decamped from Montreal to Washington. A few sucky years followed. Six in a row without a winning record, but the resulting #1 picks brought in Strasburg and Harper, who are now part of four playoff appearances in six seasons. However, that has led only to three NLDS exits - with a fourth awaiting them, if they can’t pull out a victory and send the series back to Washington.

After last night’s events, the winner will get to face the Dodgers in the National League Championship Series, so I’m pretty sure 99% of Diamondbacks’ fans will be rooting for whoever that is. Doesn’t look like the weather in Chicago is co-operating, and there’s a good chance this could end up being delayed, or perhaps even pushed back to tomorrow, the scheduled travel day. If it’s the latter, this will be a day entirely without baseball. The horror...
