AZ 11, COL 4: Ray Strikes Out 200; Offense Goes Big Again

New, 5 comments

Needing only five strikeouts to become the first Dback to achieve the feat since Dan Haren in '09, Ray took the mound for the Diamondbacks tonight

Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Early on, it didn't look like this was going to be one of Ray's better outings. Blackmon lead off the game with a walk, DJ Lemahieu brought him home with a double. Le Mahieu was brought home in turn by a triple off the bat of Arenado. CarGo brought home a third run on a ground out to Segura. 3-0 Rockies

Keep in mind, though, this is a game between the Rockies and Diamondbacks. The score was never going to stay that way. Jean Segura lead the bottom of the inning off by hitting a home run. Owings doubled and then stole third. Goldschmidt walked. Goldy then stole second during Castillo's at bat. Castillo grounded into an RBI ground out, and then Tomas grounded out for the second out. Lamb doubled, scoring Goldschmidt, to tie the game. Drury walked, and Mitch Haniger got a single to bring in the fourth run of the inning. 4-3 Dbacks

Things were pretty quiet with both teams putting up zeros until the bottom of the fourth. Jean Segura hit another solo home run, quickly followed by a double from Goldy, who was brought home by a Tomas single. Then the flood gates opened in the fifth.

Brandon Drury hit a lead off home run. Goldschmidt hit an RBI single, Tomas got an RBI single, and Wellington Castillo scored on a wild pitch. That brought the score to 11-4 (Charlie Blackmon hit a solo home run in the top of the fifth) and that's where it stayed. Matt Koch got the save the long way by pitching three scoreless innings in relief, and the Dbacks offense took the last three innings off, and deservedly so.

Just want to put a quick editorial note here. Right before game time, I suddenly got hit with a pretty bad cold, so if the above recap isn't quite up to the normal standards of the 'Pit, I apologize. It was the best I could do. Anyway, on with roll call.

No CotN tonight, because I need to go to sleep. Same teams, same time tomorrow.  Be there!
