The Diamondbacks opening day shortstop for the last two seasons will have his 2016 season cut short with hip surgery. It's unclear when exactly he first sustained the injury, but my guess is somewhere around the end of June. Ahmed's offensive and defensive performance was debilitated by that hip injury and was placed on the disabled list on July 23rd. For the 2016 season, Ahmed hit a disappointing .218/.265/.299 with 4 HR and 20 RBI in 2016 and his shortstop job could be in jeopardy next season.
For the rest of the season, we'll see Chris Owings assume the starting shortstop role although 2B Jean Segura can handle the position if necessary. Owings has been one of the few bright spots for 2016, as he's hitting .283/.331/.413 on the season with 2 HR and 29 RBI. Owings may not have the defensive prowess that Ahmed has, but has a better bat and is above average with the glove at the position. 2017 should provide an interesting battle at the position, although I think Owings should have the upperhand in that one.
