The Diamondbacks made a couple moves in advance of this 3-game homestand. The first was optioning catcher Oscar Hernandez back to AA, opening the door to reinstate Welington Castillo. In addition they designated LHP Adam Loewen for assignment and recalled Edwin Escobar from AAA Reno. That keeps the bullpen at 5 righties and 3 lefties, although two of them are former starters who couldn't handle that job this season. As for 40-man roster implications, the 40-man roster is now at 39. That opens up the possibility of a September call-up for anyone who has excelled in AAA Reno.
Escobar is 6-3 with a 4.25 ERA in 16 starts down at AAA Reno, although he will be appearing from the bullpen. He has struggled with a 15.95 ERA in 3 appearances, but the team is giving him another look as a reliever. I'm not too confident about his ability to stick to a major league roster long term, but with the team's fortunes this season you have to look at everyone. Castillo will resume his role as the team's primary starting catcher and is batting 6th in tonight's game.
