Dbacks MiLB Round-Up 6/7: Cody Reed Overcomes Wild Start

Cody Reed made his second start for Visalia and it was adventurous to say the least. He started the game by walking the first four batters he faced but escaped the inning with just two runs allowed. He then went four more innings without giving up a run or a walk and just a pair of hits. He left after five innings with 7 strikeouts having thrown 103 pitches. So the start was ugly but he really righted himself and pitched a good game. He was probably on the verge of being yanked in the first so that was a good sign he was able to figure it out and finish with a bang.

3 Stars: Kyle Jensen, Reno 2 for 3, 2 R, 1 HR (8), 5 RBI
2 Stars: Peter O'Brien, Reno 2 for 3, 2 BB, 2 R, 1 DBL, 1 RBI

AAA: Reno 11 Salt Lake 2. Braden Shipley was perfectly solid with a convincing 6-inning start allowing 2 runs over 6 innings on 4 hits and 2 walks. He completed the job on 89 pitches and struck out 3. The offense cranked it up early with 4 runs in the 1st and the team cruised from there. Kyle Jensen led the way with a 2-run homer, a sac fly and 5 RBI. Pete O'Brien stayed hot with 2 hits including a double, 2 walks and an RBI. Zack Borenstein drove in 3 runs on 2 hits with a double and also walked twice. Shipley faced off against Tim Lincecum who allowed the 4-run first and was gone after 5 innings.

AA: Mobile 3 @ Birmingham 5. The BayBears battled in a back-and-forth affair before the bullpen gave it up late. John Omahen started and was okay allowing 3 runs over 5 innings, all 3 runs scoring in the 5th. Billy Buckner gave up a run in the 7th that broke a 3-3 tie and Joey Krehbiel surrendered another in the 8th without allowing a hit. The offense couldn't quite do enough as Kevin Cron hit a solo home run, his 6th, and Cody Regis went 2 for 4 with a double.

A+: Visalia 6 @ Stockton 5. The Rawhide rallied from a 5-3 deficit in the 9th with the help of some shaky Stockton defense and pulled off an improbable win to improve to 37-21. Cody Reed got off to a miserable start walking the first four batters to start the game but settled in very nicely after that. He got through 5 innings on just 2 hits and the 4 walks while striking out 7. Gabe Speier gave up 3 runs in the 7th that took away Reed's chance at earning the win but the crazy 9th inning got the victory. Miller Diaz pitched the 8th striking out the side and Gabriel Moya pitched a perfect 9th for his first save. Henry Castillo went 3 for 5 with 2 doubles to lead the offense while Victor Reyes went 2 for 4 with a walk and an RBI.

A: Kane County 5 @ Cedar Rapids 11. Tyler Mark started the fire with 4 runs allowed over the first 3 innings and the pitchers that followed all threw some more gasoline on the fire as this one became a blowout. Fernery Ozuna went 2 for 4 and hit his 2nd home run of the season. Galli Cribbs tripled and walked and drove in two.
