D-backs recall Zack Godley, place Chris Owings on disabled list

The necessary move to make room for Zack Godley as tonight's starter has been made, and it is indeed Chris Owings to the DL.

The Arizona Diamondbacks recalled RHP Zack Godley from Triple-A Reno and placed OF Chris Owings (plantar fasciitis in his left foot) on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to June 6, as announced by D-backs Sr. Vice President & General Manager Dave Stewart. Godley, 26, will be tonight's starter for Arizona and will wear jersey No. 52. He is 4-5 with a 3.61 ERA (27 ER in 67.1 IP) in 11 starts between Double-A Mobile and Triple-A Reno this season. Godley made his Major League debut last season for the D-backs, going 5-1 with a 3.19 ERA (13 ER in 36.2 IP) in 9 games. Owings, 24, is hitting .285 (51-for-179) with 10 doubles, 4 triples, 2 homers and 18 RBI in 54 games.

With the arrival of Peter O'Brien, it was expected that a move to clear an outfield spot would likely take place, though yesterday, Chip Hale was saying that Owings seemed to be on the mend. Some wondered whether this move could instead be the end of Rickie Weeks Jr, or perhaps even a demotion for Yasmany Tomas, but it appears that Owings is not as near ready to return to the line-up as had been hoped. He'll now have to be out for at least 15 days, backdated to June 6. However, interesting to note that O'Brien is not in tonight's line-up against the Marlins at Chase Field. Perhaps a high K pitcher like Jose Fernandez was deemed too problematic for O'Brien.

With Owings out, that would appear to make Michael Bourn the everyday center fielder for the D-backs going forward. David Peralta (3) and Chris Herrmann (1) have been the other center-fielders to have started at the position for the team this season.
