Diamondbacks 3, Pirates 8

New, comments

Arizona were swept out of Pittsburgh, as the bullpen melted down in the series finale.

The Diamondbacks took the lead in the first inning without an out, on back-to-back doubles by Jean Segura and Michael Bourn, but spurned a number of subsequent opportunities to score. They paid for those as Patrick Corbin allowed a three-run homer in the second inning to his opposite number, Gerrit Cole. Arizona came back and tied things up in the top of the sixth, as Paul Goldschmidt drove in a pair with a bases-loaded single. However, the bottom half of the inning saw Corbin chased with twos and two men on, and the bullpen couldn't put out the fire, Jake Barrett allowing a two-run double.

Things went largely downhill from there, as the Pirates scored three in the eighth off Mr. Reliever Volatility, Andrew Chafin, who's ERA now sits at exactly nine. You wouldn't know it from the score, but the Diamondbacks actually outhit the Pirates 13-12. There were two-hit games for Segura, Bourn, Brandon Drury, Chris Herrmann and even Corbin himself, Bourn also drew a pair of walks, and is now hitting .400 with an OBP of .478. Small comfort though, as the D-backs lost their third in a row, and went 2-4 on the road trip. They return home to start a series against the San Diego Padres tomorrow night. soco will be along to pick over the carcass later.
