Dbacks MiLB Round-Up 5/11: Banda Looking Good

New, comments

Anthony Banda is quietly picking up where he left off last year, putting up another good effort in Mobile's 5-3 win. The 22-year-old lefty went 7 innings allowing 2 runs on 5 hits and a walk with 8 strikeouts. On the year Banda has a somewhat bulky WHIP with 41 hits and 13 walks in 40 innings, though he has struck out 41 sporting a 2.89 ERA. As one of the return pieces in the Gerardo Parra deal with Milwaukee Banda and his plus curveball look to be steering towards a back-end rotation spot or perhaps a future bullpen lefty. He's definitely showing enough to stay on the radar and be a likely candidate to make the majors sometime in the next couple of years.

Snake Stars
3 Stars: Anthony Banda, Mobile 7 IP, 5 H, 1 BB, 8 K, 2 ER, W (2-2)
2 Stars: Peter O'Brien, Reno 1 for 3, 1BB, 1 R, 1 HR (10), 2 RBI
1 Star: Braden Shipley, Reno 5 IP, 6 H, 1 BB, 6 K, 3 R, 2 ER, W (3-2)
0 Stars: Tyler Mark, Kane County 2 IP, 7 H 1 BB, 3 K, 5 ER

AAA: Reno 4 @ Sacramento 3. Braden Shipley started and didn't pitch too badly earning a Snake Star mainly because nobody else did. He didn't go deep getting through just 5 innings on 91 pitches but kept the team in the game with 3 runs allowed (just 2 earned) on 6 hits and a walk while striking out 6. That was enough when the offense posted a 4-spot in the 3rd inning, highlighted by Peter O'Brien's 10th home run, a 2-run shot. Mike Freeman went 2 for 4 and drove in the other 2 runs. Five relievers covered the last four frames in near-perfect order as they all were stellar clinging to a one-run lead. Silvino Bracho closed it out for his 6th save.

AA: Mobile 5 @ Mississippi 3. Anthony Banda did his job holding the Braves to 2 runs over 7 innings and racking up 8 strikeouts. The offense did all its damage in the 2nd inning scoring 5 times capped off by Ronnie Freeman's 2-out, 3-run homer. Michael Bourn had 2 hits including a double while Ildemarro Vargas did the same adding an RBI.

A+: Visalia 5 Stockton 6. The Rawhide did a nice job overcoming an early 4-0 deficit taking a one-run lead with a 3-run 7th inning. But reliever Jared Miller mucked it up allowing 2 runs in the top of the 9th to steal defeat from the jaws of victory. Wei-Chief Huang started and was a little better than he has been though hardly anything to get too excited about. He at least got through 5 innings allowing 4 runs (3 earned) on 9 hits and 3 walks. Austin Wright threw 2 superb innings in relief striking out 5 out of 7 batters he faced. Miller was fine posting a clean 8th but he was left in for the 9th and couldn't hold on. Marty Herum paced the offense with 2 doubles, a walk and 2 RBI. Colin Bray went 2 for 4 with a double and a walk as he tries to work out of a slow start to his season.

A: Kane County 0 @ Cedar Rapids 9.The Cougars got waxed as Tyler Mark gave up 5 runs before recording an out in the 3rd and the bullpen gave up 4 more. The offense had a whopping 4 hits, all singles. Nothing to see here. Move along.
