Dbacks MiLB Round-Up 4/26: Shipley Shines

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Braden Shipley threw a gem for the Aces posting 7 shutout innings on 3 hits and a walk with 8 strikeouts. It was easily his best outing of the year though he was robbed of the win when his bullpen failed to hold a 3-0 lead.

Snake Stars
3 Stars: Braden Shipley, Reno 7 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 8 K, 0 ER
2 Stars: Peter O'Brien, Reno 2 for 4, 2 R, 1 DBL, 1 HR (7), 3 RBI
1 Star: Dawel Lugo, Visalia 3 for 5, 1 TPL, 1 RBI
0 Stars: John Omahen, Mobile 3.2 IP, 10 H, 4 BB, 2 K, 8 ER, L (0-3)

AAA: Reno 7 Fresno 3. Braden Shipley was at his best with 7 shutout innings on 3 hits and a walk with 8 strikeouts. He gave up back to back singles in the first with one out, then struck out the next two batters. He allowed one hit the rest of the way and no runner got past first base. Unfortunately for Shipley Silvino Bracho and Scott Rice served up 3 runs in the 8th that tied the game at 3-3 and cost him the win. All's well that ends well though when the offense rallied for 4 runs in the bottom of the 8th on Kyle Jensen's pinch-hit, bases-loaded double that cleared the bases. Jake Barrett got the win for getting the final out in the 8th and pitching a clean 9th. Peter O'Brien was the offensive star for the second day in a row when he clubbed a 3-run homer in the 3rd, his 7th of the year. He also doubled leading off the 8th to start the comeback rally. Mike Freeman had 2 hits and is hitting .394 on the season.

AA: Mobile 2 Tennessee 10. Starter John Omahen got mashed for the second time in a row allowing 8 runs on 10 hits and 4 walks in less than 4 innings. Tough to see him staying in that rotation much longer with his ugly 11.93 ERA. The offense got off to a 2-0 lead in the 2nd on Gabriel Guerrero's 2-run homer before the pitching meltdown overwhelmed that slim lead. Kevin Medrano and Ronnie Freeman chipped in with 2 hits each.

A+: Visalia 5 Modesto 4. Brad Keller had a solid outing except for a rough 5th inning when he allowed 4 runs via 2 home run balls. Only two of the runs were earned as a Henry Castillo error preceded the 2nd home run. He got through the other 6 innings unscathed and finished with a line of 7 IP allowing those 4 runs on 8 hits and a walk with 3 strikeouts on 97 pitches. The offense bailed him out of that 4-1 deficit when they tied the game at 4-4 with 3 runs in the bottom of the 5th capped off by a Rudy Flores 2-run homer. The score stayed that way all the way to the bottom of the 10th when the Rawhide loaded the bases with one out and a ground ball error off the bat of Victor Reyes allowed the winning run to score. Zac Curtis threw 2 perfect innings of relief with 4 strikeouts and Bud Jeter got the win with a shutout 10th. Dawel Lugo had 3 hits including a triple to pace the offense.

A: Kane County 1 @ Dayton 3. Starter Carlos Hernandez pitched okay allowing 3 runs over 5.2 innings on 5 hits and 3 walks with 7 strikeouts. But that wasn't nearly good enough as the Cougars offense was completely stymied by Dayton starter Franderlynn Romero who held them to one hit over 7 innings with a whopping 12 strikeouts. The team tried to rally in the 9th when a pair of walks and a single by Trevor Mitsui cut the lead to 3-1 with one out. But Joe Munoz struck out swinging and Zach Nehrir was picked off second on the play to snuff it out.
